I am the leader of a military history club at my school. On the day Midway came out, I gave a presentation on the battle of Midway, at times it was detailed to the minute. I did hours of research and I am quite proud of the result. That night, the rest of the club and I went out to see Midway as a group, and we were all very pleased to see how many cool, historical details they were able to add in the finished product. The accuracy was impressive for a period war movie, especially a war movie of this caliber.
Additionally, the acting in the movie was quite good, and although I doubt any of the actors will be nominated for an Oscar, that doesn’t mean the acting was not adequate. Some of my club mates got hung up thinking the CGI was unrealistic, but I could not tell when they were issuing CGI vs practical effects (since they used both). The story was a little slow to begin, but the relative singularity of the narrative required the extra details in order to simplify the viewer experience and set the stage for the climax, which is the battle of Midway of course. However, the parts of the story that could included in the “slow” category would be the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Doolittle raid, and other important moments in the Pacific theater leading up to Midway, so really the slow parts were not that slow, it’s just the movie took its time getting to Midway. Overall, I’d give this a 9.6/10, and I can’t wait for it to come to Netflix or Prime so I can watch it again.
