Like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Thelma & Louise is about freedom and friendship. It’s also about mysogeny and control, Yet none of these messages are overplayed; we are shown these women’s lives and have been allowed to judge them for ourselves. Accordingly, Sarandon’s character is refreshingly unsympathetic at times. It’s a wonderful, raw and ultimately sad depiction of the American Dream, and the scene when they are silently driving through the Grand Canyon is at night is quite magical. It would have liked more moments like this, more quiet reflection and less ya-haa, but on balance, Thelma and Louise is a classic and the two central performances are outstanding.
