My wife and I watched with great interest the recent show on polygamy. We have a specific concern in our province of Ontario about religion being put above our laws.
Polygamy is illegal in Canada. I`m wondering why? We as Canadians are suckered in to believing we have to bend for certain religious rights. ( "rights" is an odd description actually). If polygamy is Muslim "religious right" (there`s that saying again) ,why is it illegal? The one Muslim you interviewed impressed me.He claimed as a Canadian Muslim,he wanted to be accepted and obey Canadian laws. Now the other fellow, who helped marry Muslim`s who wanted another wife, when told it was illegal, laughed. "Go ahead and arrest me.We`ll go to court and guess who will win?" And he`s correct! Canada has laws, but will not enforce them in fear of offending someone. We`ve become pathetic. If a Muslim is breaking the law, take them to court as you would anyone else. But it`s become a joke.Or a political opportunity for a politician to get votes.
Canada also has motorcycle helmet laws. But again, because of "religious rights" and politicians needing votes,a Sikh is exempt from helmet laws? While the rest non -Sikh motorcycle riders are fined for the same? Why? When did riding a motorcycle become a "religious right?" (That phrase makes my blood boil) Doug Ford brought it to Ontario. Again why? For votes?
But now here we are. If a Sikh is exempt from motorcycle helmet laws, why are Muslim not exempted from polygamy laws? Who gets to decide who is or who isn`t above Canadian laws? Or drop the polygamy law for Muslim. And enforce the helmet law on Sikhs or drop the law for all Canadians citizens? No double standard laws,no religion above the law.Period.
