You can argue about the direction, and how much of the film is homage and how much is genuinely new, but yee gods Joaquin Phoenix's performance is astonishing. ignore the critics; there's some kind of anti-Joker campaign among critics for political reasons, listen to the audiences. This is amazing. An instant classic.
