A fantastic play! It must have been shocking in the period that it was released, for in 19th-century sexism was not even a word, therefore not an issue, it was simply how things worked. This is confirmed in Nora’s sentence: “I know quite well, Torvald, that most people would think you right, and that views of that kind are to be found in books; but I can no longer content myself with what most people say, or with is found in books. I must think over things for myself and get to understand them.”
Hopefully, this play opened the eyes of many women and men about how hurtful and suffocating a relationship can be if it values only one gender more than the other. The fight against the patriarchy continues until nowadays, and the art and literature are strong instruments to expose and bring reflection to society about these sensitive subjects, in order to make the world a better and equal place for everyone.
