This was the first movie I’ve seen since the pandemic in theaters, and it takes the cake for being one of the absolute worst movies I’ve ever seen. I always enjoy Margot Robbie, but the rest of the performances and characters really weren’t that memorable or good for that matter, to be honest I just saw it this afternoon and I already only remember three characters names (two of which were from the 2016 movie!). They were all just one dimensional, with one or two characteristics making up their entire personalities. *spoilers* John Cena is super patriotic to the point of stupidity, Rat Girl is sleepy at random points, Polka Dot Boy is basically an irrelevant, silent epitome of the Oedipus Complex, and Shark Man is just plain dumb. And it doesn’t help that most of the characters originally introduced are just killed within the first fifteen minutes of the movie before introducing the half baked main characters previously mentioned. Then the characters go on many irrelevant, typically gory side quests that really have no purpose to the rest of the film. They massacre their allied rebel camp for no reason other than an attempt at “comedy”, Harley kills her boy toy President which has no other affect on the plot, and they go to a club and have fun because they wanted the movie to hit a certain time length and needed even more filler. The main plot of the movie is finally revealed that there is an alien starfish that is going to “destroy the world” or some vague threat seen in just about every superhero movie. It could’ve actually been a cool development but instead it just walks around before eventually being killed by the squad. They could’ve had some cool mind tricks or showing the zombie starfish army have a cool battle but instead it’s just an anticlimactic, unnecessarily gory pushover. They also try to throw in this plot twist that *gasp* America is the real bad guy because they built the lab in the country and were trying to destroy their evidence through the suicide squad. John Cena wants to go along and have a cover up but the rest of the crew wants to expose the US. They eventually defeat their friend and go through the whole battle in part to save this hard drive with evidence of the project so the world can know the truth but then the Idris Alba assassin who likes to say the f word at random times decides to cover it up to protect the group and his daughter. WHAT?! That COMPLETELY RUINS THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THE MOVIE! YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THE EXPERIMENTERS THEN! If the moral was supposed to be stand up for what’s right or the truth or the government or whatever they were trying to go for, they just completely ruined the whole message. And that’s my main problem with this movie, it just goes on forever without any purpose or meaning behind it other than just showing off CGI destruction and gore scenes. If you are using gore or CGI, use it to supplement your plot, not to make it more important than the plot or message. But as a result, this movie just turned out to be a big waste of two hours and exists without meaning. The actions these characters took changed nothing because they backed down instead of trying to right the wrongs made by the bad guys. All those people introduced to us throughout the movie meant nothing to the story and to the characters apparently. Nonsensical deaths. All in all (if you read this far), spend your time in a better way than this dreadful movie.
