To Laurie Halse Anderson
This is probably the only book in which it made me in a very sad state every time I read it.I personally loves these kinds of novels. You can relate to the characters situation. I think whenever I read Speak it really strikes a chord.I think that Speak was absolutely genius . I still wonder. What came to mind when you wrote this book? Speak represents all of those people who suffer from rape and bullying .I think you did not fill enough details about the characters . I think that if that were changed it would be easier to piece the puzzle together. I also think that the most moving part was at the end when she found her voice and yelled “NOOOO!” . I honestly reread that over 30 times. It was spectacular in the way that you described Melinda’s feelings . I think you did a good job describing Melinda’s rape . It sounded so hazy and faint , as if Melinda was trying to remember the event. I think that maybe you could have used a multi-perspective book where each chapter states a different character . I think his because with a diary type format , we only see what Melinda sees . We don’t see Heather’s, Ivy’s, or even Andy’s perspective.I think doing this would make the book more dramatic and we as the readers would be able to see each character's thoughts.I t would make the book more interesting. Like maybe Andy thought his rude behaviors were funny , or maybe Mr.Freeman thinking about his canvas. There are some many new possibilities that could come up . I think that I found the main similarity or connection between me and Melinda was that at one point in our lives we felt like an outcast. We all have . When you enter a new school you feel just like Melinda . Scared if you will make any friends , worried that you might make a bad impression, or stressed that no one will talk to you . I think that is how I feel whenever it is my first day at a new school . But no matter what the struggle , it usually comes out just fine. In the end Melinda is able to find her place at school . Overall , Speak was a very good novel with different feelings and emotions . At one point I found myself smiling or I even found myself sad . Everytime I read Speak , it gives me a chance to realize what I should be grateful for and why I should be motivated to help others who are not so lucky.
