Maharaja (2024): Tamil Film: Vijay Sethupathy’s 50th Film (VJS-50): Comical Thriller, a new genre: with linear narrative of a story that goes back and forth, making one to guess the timing for sequence and anticipate the next move. Never seen such a comedy treatment for a serious thriller, all the knots keep unfolding until the last frame. Excellent editing and matching, but not disturbing music. விஜய் சேதுபதியின் வழக்கமான, அலட்டல் இல்லாத, அதே நேரம் அழுத்தமான நடிப்பில், அனுராக் கஷ்யப் உட்பட மற்ற நடிகர் நடிகைகள், காணாது போகிறார்கள் (அபிராமி, திவ்யபாரதி, முனீஸ்காந்த், பாய்ஸ் மணிகண்டன், பாரதிராஜா இதில் அடக்கம்). இரண்டு மூன்று இடங்களில், நட்டி/நட்ராஜ் கைதட்டல் வாங்குகிறார். குப்பைத்தொட்டி காணாது போய், அது திருட்டு என்று போலீஸ் வரை போய், போஸ்கோ வழக்காகி திரும்பும் போது, இந்தப்படம் காமெடியில் இருந்து, தடம் மாறித் த்ரில்லர் ஆகிறது. அந்தாதி மாறி, முடிவில் தொடக்கம் வைத்துக் கதை பின்னிய டைரக்டர் நிதிலனுக்கும், இந்தக் கதைக்கு ஏற்றவாறு மாற்றி நடித்த விஜய் சேதுபதிக்கும் இந்தப் படம் ஒரு வெற்றிப்படம்.

Premalu (2024): Tamil version film: காதல் படம்: தெலுங்கானாவில் நடக்கும் மலையாள ஒரிஜினல் படம் மொழிமாற்றத்தில் தமிழில். எல்லோரும், எல்லாமும் இயல்பாக, இயக்குநர் லாஜிக்குக்குக் கவலைப்படாமல் போகிற போக்கில், விட்டு கடைசியில் ஒரு லாஜிக் முடிச்சுடன் முடிகிறது. கதாநாயகி புதுசு (சின்ன வயசு சுகன்யாவையும், சமந்தாவையும் ஞாபகப்படுத்துகிறார்), கதாநாயகன் புதுசு (செஸ் விஸ்வநாதன் ஆனந்த் சாயலில்), வில்லன் புதுசு (ஜிம்முக்குப் போன ஜெமினி கணேசன்!!). கதை அரதல் பழசு. களம் புதுசு. ஐடி மக்களும், காலேஜ் பசங்களும், கால ஓட்டத்தில் சந்திக்கும் கதை. என்னதான் சிரமப்பட்டு, தமிழாக்கத்தில் பாடல், எழுத்துக்கள் வரை திருத்தமாகச் செய்திருந்தாலும், ரேணி குண்டா ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனில் SELAM (sic) என்று எழுத்துப் பார்க்கையில், உள்ளுக்கு உதைக்கிறது. காதலுக்கு மொழி முக்கியம் இல்லை என்று புரிந்து கொண்டு அனைவரும் வீட்டுக்குப் போலாம்லு..!

Film Review: Tamil: “Godfather”: Feb 2020 The title is misleading as if it has something to do with an “Italian Job”. It does not even go near the namesake movies by Robert De Nero / Al Pacino. The imported Italian look alike story does not even touch the class of gang war movies about North Madras. The best part is “Nut” becoming a “Bolt” from the blue. Nutty, aka Natraj, cinematographer cum actor, has a lead in this film, unlike the negative, but still suiting character in his earlier “Sadhuranga Vaettai” and becomes the hunted here, than the hunter. The story revolves around an apartment complex, a hospital and a factory and one gets almost claustrophobic. The focal point is a school kid (family-Nutty and Ananya), who is “hunted”, for harvest of the heart for a transplant, required for the son of a mob leader. The movie ends abruptly (midway in 1.5 hours, including intermission), when mob leader dies and a Police SI, leader’s relative, taking over the “hunt”. If there is a sequel, I am certainly not looking forward to it.

Good Night: 2023 May 12: Tamil Film Review: குட் நைட் என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக "குறட்டை" என்றே பெயரிட்டிருக்கலாம். ரொம்ப நாள் கழித்து, வாய் விட்டு சிரிக்க வைத்த படம். பெரிய நடிகர் நடிகைகள், பெருத்த கதையம்சம், பிரமாதமான இசை, பாடல்கள் என்று எதுவுமேயில்லை. கதாநாயகமும், வில்லத்தனமும், இரண்டுமே குறட்டை. அதை ஒட்டியே "காதல், குறும்பு, சோகம், அம்மா சென்டிமென்ட், குடும்பத்திலும் அலுவலகத்திலும் கலாய்" என்று கதை. ஸ்லாப்ஸ்டிக் நான் ஸ்டாப் ஹயூமர் ரகம். கதாநாயகியைப் பார்க்கும் போது மட்டும் "முதல் நீ..முடிவும் நீ..." என்ற சித் ஶ்ரீராமின் குரல் காதில் ரீங்கரிக்கிறது. எதையும் எதிர்பார்க்காமல் போனால், சிரித்து விட்டு வரலாம்.

Film Review: Tamil: PeNguin (பெண்குயின்): 19/June/2020: Exclusive Release on Amazon Prime Video (as the earlier Jyothika Starrer, PonmagaL VandhaaL). Typical Karthik Subbaraj (Pizza)'s make-belief suspenseful thriller and Eashvar Karthic (Directorial debut) has done it with 100% undivided attention from Karthik Subbaraj. Suspense, Mystery, Bloody scenes, leading to kindnapping of same age kids with speculation on child abuse and final dose of organ harvest, all boiling down in a pleasant Kodaikanal scenic surrounding, finally to childhood jealousy pointed at Keerthy Suresh. It is better to watch this film with some brave heart, like Keerthy Suresh herself, who outsmarts police, in following clues and nailing the suspected killer and the actual abductor. Finally, one is left with Mothers' Day messages. Definitely yet another heroine-centric film and a definite winner for our “Savithri” Keerthy Suresh, another milestone in her career...!

Film Review: 29/May/20: Direct release on Prime Video: "Ponmagal VandhaaL" (பொன்மகள் வந்தாள்): முழுவதும் ஜோதிகா படம். கதை Child Abuse + Court Scenes என்று சுற்றி வர, "வெள்ளைப்பூக்கள்" மற்றும் "நேர் கொண்ட பார்வை" ஞாபகம் வருகிறது. பாக்கியராஜ், பார்த்திபன், பாண்டியராஜன், தியாகராஜன், பிரதாப் போத்தன் என்று ஏகப்பட்ட 80s முகங்கள். இடையிடையே, "ரக தாதா", "என் இனிய பொன் நிலாவே", பார்த்திபனின் பஞ்ச் வசனங்களும், படத்தைக் கடைசி சஸ்பென்ஸ் வரை கொண்டு செல்கின்றன. ஜோதிகாவுக்காக ஒரு படம் தயாரித்திருப்பது கணவர் சூர்யா. அதற்காக இதைக் குடும்பப் படம் என்று சொல்லி விடமுடியாது. நீ..ள..ச் சொல்லப்பட்ட படம்.

Film Review: Tamil: Feb 28, 2020 “Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal”- Shortly, KKK It is a definite entertainer. Its story line embraces many Hollywood films on Con Artist-cum-Romance (“Entrapment” paired double with “Focus”), thus ending up as an “Oceans Four” literally. - It could have been a typical Sivakarthikeyan film, but with boyish Dulquer Salman, relying on a dependant comedian friend, one with a mind voice. - It could have been a typical Gautam Vasudev Menon Film (GVM) with almost every second dialog in English, also involving a Police Thread. Directed by a fresh name, Desing Periyasamy. The two young males con artists surprise with tricks (orders in online portals, receiving outside the delivery point, returning quoting flimsy reasons, after replacing essential integrals, with old spares to sell originals in black market, using skimmers to copy car locks and robbing, to running a real car on remote as in 007 style etc) fall for two other cons, young gals (pals from an orphanage), without knowing that girls are also con artists. Gautam Vasudev Menon comes in throughout the film, as Police SP, who tracks actually the girls (for a reason revealed at the end), while the boys think that they are in police trap. Such surprises and twists are the ones that make this film an entertainer. The film moves from Chennai to Goa and finally to Delhi, with the four con artists and the DSP also travels to all these places. The drone shots of the locales are excellent and music is so subtle that one totally misses it. One song sounds familiar though. Probably from Promos. The heroine is straight out of model line up for “Colgate” ad and makes little impression than her companion. It is a definite family entertainer, though kids will need a lot of explanation on con ideas. Totally, fun.

Watched a 2009 US film: “Love Happens”: When a motivational speaker and writer (“Self-Help Guru” is the term) finds himself (Aaron Elkhart) in a fix, unable to come to terms with the death of his wife, a florist (Jennifer Anniston) helps him out. The final touch has been lifted and introduced in our own multilingual “Bangalore Days”. Rated 16+ for strong language, it is a beautiful film, set in Seattle, WA and supported by actors Martin Sheen, Dan Fogler and Judy Greer. Directed by Brandon Camp. A parrot, the Space Needle, a car accident, flower arrangements and paintings in a hotel and quirky word puzzles of the florist, all play a part in this fine film.

Excellent Movie. Family and very sentimental. “18 Regali”: 2020: Italian (with English subtitles). A classic in recent times. “18 Regali” translates to “18 Presents or Gifts” in English and that the theme of this film (based on a true story). A pregnant mother with terminal cancer leaves behind 18 sentimental gifts for her (yet unborn) daughter, Anna for her to receive on 18th birthday until 18th. Anna hates each one of them until 17th. But, fate takes her on her 18th birthday to “see for herself” (sort of vision / time travel) for her to appreciate her mother’s presence and thoughtfulness in each of the gifts. The film is rated 16+ for strong language. The three main actors (Vitoria Puccini, Benedetta Porcaroli and Eduardo Leo) lived the father-mother-daughter drama. Director Francesco Amato deserves a ample appreciation for making a double-linear story line for this excellent movie in two time periods, 18 years apart. RAI Cinema and Netflix presentation.

Ram Setu: 2022: Film Review: OTT Amazon Prime: 23/Dec/22: Excellent film on a very controversial topic (ராமாயணம் & ராமர் பாலம்). Hindi version with Tamil Audio. A finely scripted, casted and shot film with Akshay Kumar in the lead as an Archaeologist, unearthing evidences to show the existence of Rama, Rama Sethu, Ravana, Sanjeevini, Anjaneya and others from Hindu Epic "Ramayana", in the Southern tip of India (Rameshwaram/Sethukkarai) and Sri Lanka (Nuvaraliya / Triconamallie). Sensitive topic handled very nicely with the flow of Ramayana by Valmiki. Jacqueline Fernandez, Nasser and a host of others support the lead. I liked the movie very much and wish that this team be given the task of Ponniyin Selvan Part-2 (PS-2).
