I made the mistake of reading the book beforehand. The writing style made me crazy. Almost zero punctuation and no quotation marks! Yikes! Hard to keep track and keep reading the tone without. Lazy writing.
Okay, the movie had a great flow and didn’t really slow or stall. Perilous situations were action packed and believable. They changed the initial meeting and transferring of Johanna to Captain Kidd. Read the book. They erased a beautiful depiction of how resourceful and persevering people are and the respect and deference given by individual friendships or business dealings, although rare, across race lines, even then.
