I have high expectations for this series. I really wanted a female Doctor Who and I'm glad it's happened.
I like many aspects of Jodie Whitaker's character. Her acting is superb. What she has achieved with the bland dialogue is great. The rest of the actors are largely good and well cast.
Unfortunately, the writing just can't be ignored. There's too much of a 'we followed a formula' vibe. Too much storytelling - I find myself mumbling 'don't tell; show!', or 'you're wasting valuable time having this whole scene!' at least a handful of times every episode.
The only episode that was good was the Rosa episode. That wasn't merely good, it was a standout episode. The Ghost Monument also had some good moments. Yet, overall the episodes have ill-conceived monsters, dialogue that boarders on drivel, and The Doctor isn't on the ball.
The show has become simplistic and predictable. I think of it now as a time travelling Aesop's Fables. Every episode could just cut to the chase and include a neon sign with; 'here is the moral'. DW always had high morals, dealt with emerging issues, and promoted tolerance and empathy. That's why we like it, but it used to be delivered in a less patronising way. Let's get back to subtlety and give us complex plots, please!
This is just one woman's opinion. I don't speak for all women or DW fans.
