Great movie, almost perfect. But they made classic liberal mistakes. For one thing, the part where he's like "how's the gun violence (in your world)" and she's like "oooo not so good" is ridiculous because, no matter your perspective on the matter, the gun violence in the game was clearly much much much worse. No comparison. It was just clearly a political line that didn't play well. Also, I felt like the pacing at the beginning was actually a little TOO fast. Could've sat a bit more with the set up before diving into Act II. But the most egregious error the movie makes is attempting to sell the audience on some Leftist utopia where people can do whatever they want all the time and there's no need for money or banks (all those dirty capitalist concepts). The problem with that is it only seems fun for like two seconds. Even before the movie ends you'll find yourself being like, well, that would suck to be in Free World. The movie goes out of its way to say how popular Free World is and that players just like watching NPCs go about their daily lives. But what motivates the NPCs to DO anything if they don't experience the want for certain things and the toil to earn them? If everyone was just given whatever we wanted we'd all be depressed and unhealthy and utterly sedate. To be happy we need to pursue things which matter to us and earn them through persistence and hard work. The game world at the end is portrayed like paradise, but think about it for a second and it sounds more like hell. The reality is if the NPC characters in Free World didn't NEED anything and have to take action to acquire it then they would be boring as hell to watch because they wouldn't do anything.
In any case, in spite of those qualms, the film does a lot really well. The love story which drives it is pure gold, and handled perfectly to my satisfaction. I love the chemistry between all the cast. The CGI, direction, sets, acting, cinematography, audio, music... Awesome. Basically it's a fabulous movie only marred by the layer of liberal propaganda (or delusion) messing up the finale.
