Beautifully written period drama and unbearably moving story of a flawed and tragic young woman attempting to secure a rich husband & her place in society. Loved the film adaptation starring Gillian Anderson.

Disappointing! Unfortunate casting - I found Lily James's constant gurning & over-acting really annoying. Linda's vulnerability and the tragedy of her situation - so privileged, yet lacking in education and fitness fir the world - were lacking. Also, the insistently modern treatment of a period drama was jarring, ham-fisted & tiresomely cliched.
