A lot of critics seem to have it in for Gervais. A constant comparison of The Office to Afterlife is mentioned and whilst a small reflection on the writers differences and development may be apt they seem to make it all about just that - when really you need to see After Life as a separate show and entatity. Especially when they are completely different topics. A common remark is it's not as funny as The Office....but ofcourse it's not, its about death - the fact there are any jokes at all shows Gervais skill at finding the funny even in the darkest of times.
I do believe this is Gervais best work. I laughed, I cried, I wept and I hurt in places and that can only be due to Ricky's incredible authentic writing skills which make you feel you're watching something very real. It was relatable and scary if you have a loved one and imagine the same thing happening. I felt every bit of Tony's grief. Its a Must-See show for sure!
