The plot is fine. I say around 6/10. Some parts were predictable and already seen before. I still want to give some credit to it because of the hard work.
The movie aesthetics... I say around 5/10.
It was okay. The characters did look Southeast Asian. The baby looks East Asian but that's because Southeast Asians sometimes have East Asian features. We are predominantly brown-skinned though. But the baby's features were still accurate. but I think they could have explored Southeast Asian culture more because it feels so vague, speaking as a Southeast Asian. I recognized some elements from my country such as the shrimp paste, Arnis, the parols, and whatnot. But Southeast Asia is such a colorful, beautiful, and unique Asian region and I feel like they failed to give its unique beauty justice. And the tribes were too similar, I think they should have separated the cultures on each tribe instead of mashing them together to create fictional tribes. My culture was on the Heart tribe, Talon tribe, and Fang tribe all at once. I feel like Disney just cherry-picked Filipino aspects and threw them on different random tribes. It was like watching a mix between ATLA and Black Panther. And the dragon doesn't look Asian at all except her human form.
I'm not trying to be whiny. It's just that Southeast Asians rarely get represented in the media and our culture is always mistaken for East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean). And while some features are similar, the culture is what makes us unique from them. If you enjoyed this movie, good for you. Don't let this review ruin your feelings on the movie. But do not try to disagree with me either. My views are valid.
