The original narrative based tactical shooter in 1998 for the PC, ported to Mac OS, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color. This focus is on the Nintendo 64 and it's analog and C-pad configuration. Gameplay follows a debrief of the mission into two stages: Planning and Execution. The planning stage-allowing for the player plot a plan of action to be carried out by four squads of Rainbow. These teams' rosters, body armor, equipment, firearms, positions and tactics are customizable. Execution has AI-controlled squads follow a path and tactics set from the planning stage, engaging targets, disarming charges and securing hostages/VIPs/POI to be escorted to exfiltration. "Realism"is an in-game mechanic revolving around the concept of the lethality of a single bullet. All in-game characters can be wounded, incapacitated or killed inflicted with only one or two gunshot wounds. Gameplay is brief and fast-paced lasting in singular minutes. An aspect highly valued in the franchise to date. Remarkable given the technology (N64) and complexity of game features and mechanics presented regarding technological limitations and execution. Gameplay is in first-person, allowing control of any living operative at will with the player's respective squad. The player is the de facto squad leader.
