I went to watch Oppenheimer yesterday (August 6th) and I thought it was brilliant. By the end, I just thought, “Bloody hell. Oppenheimer - what a legend.” On the one hand, I think that without Oppenheimer and his invention of the atomic bomb, the world could be somewhat different today as nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction might not have been created, unless another physicist who had the same idea as Oppenheimer came along at some point and decided to elaborate on the ideas of what mankind really can do in the field of physics. In addition, I think that America would most likely still be at odds with Japan if it weren’t for this revolutionary invention. On the other hand, I think that weapons of mass destruction, such as the atomic bomb, should not have been used as retaliatory devices against nations around the world, such as Japan, because imagine if Oppenheimer and his team of scientists made a mistake during the building of the bomb and it turned the world into a barren wasteland devoid of life. I know I sound like I’m talking a sci-fi scenario but could anybody imagine if that did happen? No historians would be able to make interpretations of the event of the atomic bomb’s explosion if the death of the world was the outcome because the world and its history would have to start from scratch again, but then history could in all likelihood repeat itself, with experts such as Oppenheimer existing again and being able to invent this sort of weapon a second time.
