I am from Trinidad and Tobago and had lived in Washington Heights, 175th St, and Fort Washington Ave, for approximately nine years. I love this film because it is a perfect depiction of the neighborhood and life in Washington Heights; a neighborhood I have grown to love and am so excited to see it on the big screen. Lin Manuel did a fantastic job!
I love the themes about the Dreamers and the community that support each other. The parents who come to America so that they can give their children better opportunities. The nostalgia for back home. This film was pack with so many social issues that immigrants face. As an immigrant, I can relate to everything in the movie.
I read some comments that state, there should be more black people in the film, but I disagree as a former resident because when I step off the A train, in the Heights, it is pretty much what I see in the film. Hispanics make up most of the neighborhood.
With the arrival of gentrification, many young white folks and students who cannot afford Manhattan rent are moving to the Heights, and long-time Hispanic residents and businesses are being pushed out. Something the film touch on too. I look forward to more work from this amazing artist.
