Dom Chrysostom

A movie that gives a snap shot into a different era in American culture. The suspense created by the melodramatic acting adds to the off kilter feel of Bernice Lee straddling two worlds. Ironically, the actress Isabel Cooley's presence in the film (Bertha, the maid) actually conveys the gravitas of the film and the theme of the possibilities of passing for white. Awkward situation then, and now, for some. Love who you are.

Fun entertainment with a curious, yet delightful religious twist at the end. Well cast and well written narrative, not predictable. Drawing from a wide swath of Americana.
