Cara Romero is a great storyteller. Cara begins as your stereotypical tia/señora who is very critical of everyone else's mistakes but is also unable to see how she can be negative, judgemental and just plain wrong. It's written in a way that they almost seem like therapy sessions, rather than job counseling. Throughout her time with the job counselor she recounts the tragedies that led her up to that moment, some admittedly her fault, but often she is just a victim of her circumstances. She grows so much in those twelve sessions. We see how she impacts her community, and how thr community (and gentrification) impact her.
This a story about community, grief, gentrification In New York, and
ultimately growth told through the experienced of an immigrant mother. It delves into the biases we carry that often impact our relationships with others.
