I loved this film. It was beautiful, shocking...and painful. If you’re looking to be entertained, choose an action flick or a comedy. This is a film for those looking for an experience. The acting was really good. The characters felt very real, we know or have known these people in our own lives. So when the heartbreak comes, we feel it too.
This is the American story of a suburban Black family in crisis, in mourning, and in individual self-discovery. The movie has two distinct halves from the points of view of first, of the brother/son/star high school wrestling athlete...and then his quiet, introspective, thoughtful and subtly strong sister. I loved how this was done. And the change in perspective revealed how we can oftentimes live in the same house with a person yet have no true understanding of how much they are struggling.
This film is a treatise on how sometimes parents are so dedicated to being disciplinarians and breadwinners that they don’t provide a safe environment for their kids or spouses to feel comfortable talking to them about the things that truly matter.
