Dune is a beautiful movie. The shot composition, the score, the editing- all very well done. Even down to the cast, every actor in this is beautiful.
Dune is not a good movie.
The very pretty shots fall very short of being effective story telling. Dramatic panorama after dramatic panorama, and not one of them feels earned. Every moment of this movie is focused on making the audience feel like it's GRAND, and that comes at the expense of making the audience care about the characters, the plot, the politics. I can tell you that the only clear theme of this movie is "destiny," but I can't possibly tell you what it is trying to say about destiny.
Each song, each moment of sound design does a very good job of telling the audience that this moment is very dramatic and important. But that's not a good thing. If the music is constantly swelling, it loses its meaning very quickly.
I had no sense of tension throughout this movie, I didn't care about the characters, the plot managed to feel meandering despite very few things actually happening.
It's also not a good adaptation, aside from being an unsatisfying movie in its own right.
