As a fan who's seen the series multiple times, I couldn't really be happier with this film unless they announce they're doing more. They made it clear from the start this was going to focus on Dickie and it's a solid Sopranos story - brutal, funny, dramatic, families and gangsters. A great cast perfectly embodies the spirits of their characters in so many subtle yet powerful ways. Michael Gandolfini does his dad proud, but youngest Tony is just as good as is the rest of the cast. Corey Stoll is fantastic as Junior and Vera Farmiga's Livia is just as toxic as Nancy Marchand's. The scene with Tony in the kitchen is cinematic deja-vu. There's so much for a fan here I don't think you can fully appreciate all of it until a second viewing. Ray Liotta gives a great performance as two distinctly different brothers. Dickie's dad is unlikable, sort of like a Ralphie. But his brother, who Dickie visits in Prison is calm and philosophical. These scenes cleverly serve the story the way Dr. Melfi would. The numbers racket plot is good, it fits well and is well acted, it's Dickie's way of earning. The cinematography is great and looks so good on the big screen. It's only natural to want more Satriale's, but viewers shouldn't get upset there wasn't more Tony or Paulie and Sil. We got a great two more hours of The Sopranos after so many years, I was thrilled to go back to Jersey.
