After reading some of the reviews, it confirms the idea that we all perceive things differently.
Having studied film back in my college days, I viewed this with awe and admiration for the artistry of the cinematographer first, then, the director, and the actors. The film is a tribute to black and white films and especially those that came from European countries back in the day - I thought of Ingmar Bergman, Jean Cocteau, Truffaut. While Ripley may not reach the bar they set, it's pretty close.
I think Zaillian has made this film his own without leaning on other interpretations. It is his own creation.
There is, in my opinion, one flaw in the plot which I won't mention so as not to spoil the viewing for others.
We so enjoyed this film series. Say what you will about it but it is an offering of film art.
