All Allen B Chinen’s books are excellent, oiling the metaphorical mind while unfolding an enjoyable learning experience. This is possibly my least favourite, but perhaps because it is aimed at the Hero rather than the Heroine’s journey, but there are gems within this book’s covers so well worth adding to your library, like The King’s Ghoul, with riddles within a story:
(from my memory, not Chinen’s text)
Once there was a king who held court each month, and each month a mage appeared and wordlessly presented him with a peach. The king in turn handed the peach to the Grand Vizier who threw it into the treasury.
One day a pet monkey snatched the peach and bit into it, revealing a jewel at its heart…
And that is only the start…
