I found this film very moving, authentically 80s and well paced. I found the portrayal of mental illness incredibly well etched. The love story through a bipolar lens made complete sense and the backdrop of racism covert and overt were disturbing.
I’m not sure what the critics saw but they didn’t see the film that I saw. Maybe living through this era made it all the more convincing to me. The movie delivered its own punchline - that when we watch a film we can miss the darkness in the trick of the light beams but this film slowed it down enough for you to catch the darkness.
