4 stars and no less! (5 would be excessive & 3 uncharitable)
Please do not heed the racist reviews that include mention of the race, gender, or sexual orientation of characters. The story is not in the least affected by these choices, I'd say they diversify/improve the same. Fixating on trivial details is moral panic. Now the review:
The first season was enjoyable. Not the absolute best but right up there. I went in with 0 expectations of originality. But it stood on its own two feet.
Linklater's Batman has a youthful calmness to it. This version of Gotham and all its characters occupy a unique setting rid of the baggage of past iterations. Nothing in the 10-episode run fatigued me (and it was only the Joker tease of all things that felt annoying; enough with the Joker). We saw Batman trying to punch a ghost, provide his phone number to "Gordon", take a freak out to dinner, and shield a soul-sucking Vampire from the morning sun. This all felt new.
The story does not waste screentime on how Dent's face was disfigured or how Batman's parents were shot. We are treated to the psychological issues and the deep friendship that exists between our well-known pantheon of characters. Cases in point are the friendship between Dent and Bruce, or Barbara and Harleen.
The show will add to your understanding and appreciation of Gotham's residents, whom you have known for so long that you thought you had them all figured out. We have much to look forward to in Season 2.
