I’m afraid this movie is going to fall flat to it’s intended audience. In fact, I’m not sure what demographic the movie makers thought they were targeting. It’s clearly too complicated and long for under 12 year olds. I also don’t see it finding interest from teens. The only audience it could possibly find is adults with a specific interest in “the real” Buzz Lightyear’s “true” background story and as that story is deeply rooted in a complex science fiction theme the audience is further boiled down to science fiction fans in addition to those specific fans of the Toy Story franchise. However, by specifically utilizing a different voice actor to distinguish the Toy Story “just a T-O-Y…toy” Buzz action figure from the “real” Buzz Lightyear of fictional movie back story fame alleged within the film, the character and charm of Buzz is just lost on this already narrow audience. After 4 full length movies and various shorts over the last 25 years, Disney and the film makers should have realized Tim Allen IS Buzz Lightyear, Toy or “Real.” This further confused in the fact that both are animated versions. I believe the boiled down narrow audience would much prefer Allen’s portrayal of Lightyear as his personality and voice or so ingrained in our perception of who Buzz is. Period. The concepts of the storyline are interesting, to the mature viewer, and might have made for just as well received outside the Toy Story universe - which may have been the intention. In that regard though, the movie falls flat in Allen’s absence. While this may have been an attempt to truly separate the “Toy” Buzz from the “Real” Buzz, it’s more likely a cost issue as I’m sure Allen would have demanded a handsome salary to reprise the role solo from his fellow Toy Story actors. It was a mistake to make ANY Buzz Lightyear film or short without Allen. A mistake Disney had yet to make and likely won’t ever again. I have loved the Toy Story franchise since my children first requested to rent the movies decades ago. I own all 4 films on Blu Ray in my own collection AND I’ve enjoyed the shorts and films with my grandchildren. I’m a Disney fan. As with the Star Wars sequel movies, Disney allowed the film makers to drop the ball. Buzz Lightyear without Allen is much akin to Star Wars without Lucas. It just doesn’t work. Sorry Disney.
