While I can't say this is the type of P!NK I'm used to, I admit this is the album I needed from her.
The songs that make you WANT to move have an important message in each one. Whether it's about not giving up.('Never Gonna Not Dance Again'/NGNDA), being unafraid to stand up to the "pick me" crowd too self absorbed to accept the blame for their own failures (Hate Me), or simply to let go of control and let what needs to happen, happen (Trustfall). All three of these tracks needed to be said AND HEARD by many in this world, but it appears that many do not understand the messages barely concealed in each song. These three songs alone would make this album a 3/5 from any other artist, but there is more. 'Runaway' is a song that makes you want to just get up and dance-cry. Anyone who's done just that, knows exactly what kind of song 'Runaway' is. P!NK shouts the chorus, unapologetically, letting the listener know exactly how she feels, making it very clear, that it's more than ok to be carefree and vulnerable all at once.
The album opens up with a beautiful tribute to her father. She has admitted in the past that she is a daddy's girl and these songs she continues to make about him, postmortem, let's us hear how much she misses him. 'When I get there' sets the tone for this album, letting the listener know she is serious and, having lost my mother this past January (8 days before my birthday), I am able to appreciate this move towards seriousness so much more.
'Turbulence', 'Lost Cause', 'Long Way to Go', 'Our Song', 'Just Say I'm Sorry'/JSIS, 'Last Call' and 'Kids in Love' are all so emotionally charged, you can hear the fear, anger, remorse/regret and nostalgia in her voice. These songs, of sung by Adele or Celine Dion, would have gone platinum by now, but because people don't expect these types of songs from P!NK, they're labeled BORING. I don't think so.
I liken 'Turstfall' to Beyoné's '4' where the critics hated on it, yet it's one of her best both vocally and lyrically. All in all, this album is AMAZING and I recommend those who hated this album to listen to it again and really absorb each message to this album for what it is and not what you want it to be.
