I would like it to been known that I have read the book and genuinely just adored it. At the time I wasn't into mystery, so I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. That being said when I found out they were making a show, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, I knew it was going to be horrible within the first five minutes. Simon's death was a simple one. They're all in detention because somehow a burner phone was in everyone's backpack. Simon talks for a little while filling up his water. A CAR DOES DONUTS IN THE PARKING LOT, and then he drinks. While the car doesn't seem like a big deal to most, it sharpens a big character in the second book, Luis. One thing I love about the book is how everything goes full circle. I'm typing this review after finishing the third book, and I just am so appalled at the changes. Each change ruins the third book. Everything was so meticulously put into place. A dumb line in the first book could've been a huge clue in the third. Instead, I was stuck wondering if we were talking about the same book.
While the race change wasn't a huge thing for me, the personality switch up was. None of the characters were as they were written. Meave hated Simon for what he said to her. Granted not as much as Browlyn, she never would've dated him! Cooper. While I wished I didn't have to say more I really do. His coming out scene was horrific. When I read it in the book, I was so hurt that his "friends" even thought of doing this to him. It was also a huge murder club bonding scene though too. Nate stood up for him, Browlyn kissed him, it was just so chaotic, yet so them. Instead, it felt completely glossed over and made me so mad. It completely took away a part of who he was, when they didn't show the full side of being gay, which includes good and bad moments.
Next Addy, during my first time reading the books, I didn't like addy, granted I was a 12 year old who couldn't relate to anything she was saying. It wasn't until I grew a little more and matured that now addy is one of my favorite characters of the entire series. I was ready to feel all the emotions that I felt when reading the book all over, and I felt it just fell short. One of the reasons in the book Addy was with Jake was because of the pressure her mom put on her to find a "good husband". It messed with her self confidence, and it wasn't until Ashton came that we really watched her grow out and blossom. While the race thing wasn't a big thing to me, one thing I was expecting was for Addy to have long hair. Not that Annalisa doesn't have good hair, I was expecting LONG. Addy cutting her hair was her saying goodbye to Jake and the hold he had on her, so I was expecting this to be a drastic change. With the length her hair was and the way they didn't really zoom in on it, it didn't feel as important as it should've.
Next Browlyn and Nate. They were actually one of my favorite couples for a long time, so I was beyond excited for their onscreen chemistry, their inside jokes, and teamwork. Instead I got forced. Forced chemistry, forced jokes, and really no teamwork. I didn't hate a lot of things about this show, but how hard they fumbled this ship was one of them.
And finally, the ending. I'm not really sure what was happening there. Of course they had essentially abandoned everything that was written in the books, so they had to find a new ending. I didn't like it. Simple as that.
All of that being said if you haven't read the books or you are someone who can separate the book and show, then I sincerely hope you enjoy. If you cannot then stay far far away.
