This is my first time writing a review on Rotten Tomatoes, primarily to criticize this film. To sum it up, I think this is a typical low-budget movie. While the director uses artistic techniques to depict character details and creates atmosphere through lighting, these methods are neither new nor particularly difficult. In today’s films, such techniques are quite common. In my opinion, these should be built on the foundation of a solid plot before focusing on such details. However, the plot of this movie deviates entirely from the general public’s understanding of the Joker. In other words, this is not the Joker we wanted to see.
Moreover, Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn could arguably be the worst in the history of Harley Quinn adaptations. She doesn’t appear crazy at all. By the end of the movie, she comes across as just a heartbroken ordinary girl, failing to live up to the expectations of what Harley Quinn should represent.
I believe the director put a lot of effort into this film, but unfortunately, you went in the wrong direction. You should think about how to wrap up the story, and in the limited runtime of over two hours, how to make the plot tight, easy to understand, and logically coherent. The lack of this crucial element makes the film feel disjointed and unengaging for the audience.
What disappoints me even more is that the film seems to chase after so-called “artistic value,” at the expense of a solid narrative. Some people who claim to understand art might feel they grasped the "deep meaning" of this film, and perhaps that’s why it could win awards. But in my view, this is simply a poorly constructed movie dressed up as art, with no real logic or depth. The Joker, as I see him, should not just be a symbol of chaos and madness—he’s a complex, multi-layered villain, and this film clearly fails to capture that.
