Think “Mission impossible” meets “James Bond “ while Saving Private Ryan, with a touch of the 1950 movie “The Milkman.....” throw in some Boys own Magazine excitement mixed with “Raiders of the lost Ark” plus some very popular swear words beginning with F to appeal to the younger viewers.
The story.......
Two unlikely young soldiers get picked from thousands present, to take a note to a General to tell him to stop an attack because one of the two soldiers could read a map. Apparently the British Air Force ( consisting of two tiger moths) did a reconnaissance and saw the trap. Why they didn’t write a note, wrap it in a calico bag with a brick and drop it to the General to tip him off about the trap they could clearly see, beats me...
Anyway....
Lots of lucky escapes, and not one German soldier could shoot straight, not one, after many explosions, when looking for a way across no man’s land they encounter a German underground fort. A rat trips a wire and the tunnel roof collapses but only with small lumps of cement, ( so not to kill them I expect) but after being dug out they escape, of course. Then although blinded by dust and shock and in full army kit including a .303 with bayonet, they jump across a mine shaft. What was a mine shaft doing there? So there are are stabbings, and being chased into a barn by an out of control German Biplane that explodes in the Barn, and on top of them, but they escape, of course. They discover a bombed out dairy, but the milk tin is full so the water bottle is filled, because one never knows when you will come across a young well dressed lady protecting a starving baby who needs milk, in a bombed out town, and lo and behold..... it happens... really.
There are lots of explosions, lots, and lots, and lots, far too many, they look like grey and white talcum powder being blasted out of an invisible cannon. As for lucky escapes, like being washed over a water fall and then fortuitously being washed up
( like the producer I assume ) after a long swim in raging rapids then climbing up the river bank and walking straight into the British Soldiers who needed saving. By Joves!! What luck ! Jolly Hockey Sticks!!!
All throughout, the German Soldiers shooting at the two men with the important message, (written on water proof paper I hope) couldn’t hit a barn door from two feet with a bucket of rice- no wonder they lost the war........my take for what it’s worth..... the producers tried, but like the German Soldiers, they missed.....
The bomb ruined buildings were clearly fake, (Disney looking,) and the movie looks like it was filmed in a really big studio.
Of course I don’t want to spoil it for you so I won’t say who survives, or if the trap is avoided, or if the rat gets away safely.
It may win an award for music, sound, or movie copyright theft.
It may win an award, as well for “Best exploding grey talcum powder without shrapnel “ or perhaps “ The best trained rat, “ in a war movie, ever. But in Hollywood anything can happen , especially at the Academy Awards.... !!
