I moved from Kansas City to Kerrville, TX back in 2015 or so. I was doing metal roofing all over the hill country. I found this book at the Butts Library (like “H.E. Butts” as in H.E.B.) I would sit down on the shores of the Guadalupe river and read this book. Absolutely fascinating….and a stunning look at barbarism being disguised as culture, and visa-versa. I consider myself somewhat well read and educated, but was never taught about the Comanche raiding parties kidnapping early settlers to buff up the tribe. Not to mention, the complete brutality and completely foreign views on the sanctity of life.
It’s a great read, and unfolds like a historically accurate screenplay. It’s visceral and haunting, especially when knowing that it’s all true.
