I like Matt Rife, he makes me laugh, on multiple occasions. But this special just wasn't it. His written long-form material doesn't hit as well as his short-form standup videos. I also feel like the jokes and stories he told had already been said by other comedians in a funnier way. And when he talked about himself, it just felt like he wanted his audience to know that he's better than them. I get it , it's good to be confident; cocky even. But when you start alienating your audience, it's hard to keep them on board for the whole ride.
On the domestic violence controversy, I believe nothing is sacred. You can joke about anything as long as you set it up properly, give the right context, and deliver it with a velvet hammer. But damn, that joke was just lazy. It was lazy writing that reminded me of jokes teenage boys would say to sound edgy.
Now, if you're looking for this type of comedy done in a more articulated and skilled fashion, I would suggest watching Andrew Schultz. Same style of edgy humour, but executed well.
