Due to the reviews I had very low expectations, but was actually pleasantly surprised. It seems the negative reactions are from people expecting a true biopic. THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS IS! It's a fictional book adaptation. OK? Got it? Now about half these reviews should be removed based on that misunderstanding alone.
Marilyn is still a bit of an enigma but we can all agree that she likely had childhood trauma, was exploited by men, and probably abused pills and alcohol (like most of her peers in that era). The details did not need to be 100% accurate for this movie to masterfully portray the darker sides of a womans existence. This movie felt like an ode to all of our grandmothers who lived (survived) during those times. It was so refreshing to watch a movie from the perspective of a woman whos beauty and charms couldn't even shield her from the, often terrible and graphic, trials and tribulations of womanhood.
If anyone is shocked or appalled by what's in this movie I suggest you go talk to your granny about her own life. You might be in for a surprise.
