Beautiful imagery, powerful music...but the script, and especially the song lyrics, were so boring and infantile. A musical is supposed to tell stories with song. This was more like forcing the lines of the script to rhyme and be repeated in certain sections, and just putting that dialogue to music. It didn't paint a picture, it wasn't emotional or catchy at all. Singing just happened several times during the movie.
And I have to mention the creepy choreography of the animated characters. They are animated. They aren't real. When you try to incorporate human characteristics, like movement limitations, and heaving chests from breathing hard, onto a cartoon...it looks creepy. Pick realistic, or cartoon. Don't mix and match.
The "Oracles" and a couple other characters were unnecessarily weird and quirky. Like in a way that reeked of bigotry. The theme (or "moral of the story") turned out to be ridiculously lame and mundane for the epic fairy tale setting, and just sort of dropped out of nowhere at the end. So unfortunate, because it had huge possibilities for being a powerful, universally appealing movie about not giving up hope. Instead, it reduced the story to a teenager making her parents' relationship all about herself, and her feelings about it. Worse yet, the parents resolve it by apologizing for not thinking about her feelings. Worst divorce tale ever. I was disappointed enough at the third grade level of rhyming in the lyrics, but the surprise of the divorce theme at the end turned the disappointment to revulsion.
