Please give this show a watch. I’ve just finished this series and am kind of blown away by how clever and funny it has been. My husband randomly put this show on last week and I ended up getting drawn into it and had to binge every episode. I’m kind of gutted that it’s only a limited series because I truly connected to it.
I really feel like this show captured what it is like to live a groundhog existence as an office worker at a corporation... and what it is like as somebody just trying to get by in life.
Beneath the jokes, satire and dry humor in this show, there’s something special and deep in the storylines that I very much relate to. There’s a certain sadness in some episodes .. and a familiar feeling of yearning that it captured so simplistically yet so well.
There’s one episode where some of the characters have a send off for one of their co-workers that died. “You were a co-worker and you’ll always be a co-worker to us” Carole the main character says.. as silly as that line is.. there’s a certain truth to it. I’ve had a few co-workers that have died over the years and in a way, this was a special nod to that feeling you get when you find out a co-worker has died. It’s not like you really knew that co-worker, but that’s ultimately what they were to you, and you feel a certain melancholy about it before having to go back to work.
My favorite episode was episode 9 which was sort of a special and fun side-storyline featuring Carole in her quest to find the perfect wave to surf (which was a metaphor for the chase that some of us feel in life.. that hunger for “the perfect wave” which might not exist.. or which did exist all along that we missed in our search for more) it felt like a parody of a type of movie about finding oneself, yet there was a certain deepness to it that resonated with me.
This show doesn’t try too hard and is very easy to get into. It’s the right mix of being silly, fun, and having heart. Please give it a watch. I’ll be rewatching it this weekend and hope that it gets another season.
