I’m not finished with it yet, and this might be the first Sara Cate book I DNF. I adore this author’s navigation of consent and mutual pleasure in SPC, but the first spicy scene in this book is a straight up r@p3 scene with no trigger warning. A drunk MMC forces himself on the sober FMC, her thoughts turning from “I’ve always wanted to do this with him” to “I don’t want to have sex like this” to “he’s not using protection and I have reason to doubt he’s clean.” Said MMC later goes on to fantasize more encounters that involve “her gentle throat in my hands. Begging me to stop.” (pg. 31) He mentions multiple times that he is attracted to the fact that she does not want it or him. Even if this is somehow CNC, there was no mention of it in the trigger warnings.
I might continue reading out of hope that the consent and healthy dynamics I associate with this author come up, but as someone who can’t stomach r@p3 fantasies, I’m disturbed and disappointed so far.
