This is an amazing book. The character of Eleanor is so well constructed that you begin to know ahead of time what her reactions are going to be as she ventures forth discovering herself through the kindness of those she meets.
Instead of a “coming of age” novel, this is a book of true self discovery.
Eleanor sees herself as others see her and not in a good way. She takes the side of those who make fun of her and belittle her because she believes they have every reason to do so.
Meeting Raymond, and then Sammy and his family, opened the door for Eleanor to explore her past and put the ghosts to rest.
