Tony Shields

This film was made four years before I was born! I don't remember when I saw it but I have a lasting memory of the brilliance to the film. I had no desire to see the 1970's remake. In modern day terms I suppose the film making techniques appear crude but to me the impact of the way the story was put on the screen has created a lasting memory of a great film that starkly portrays the stupidity and brutality of war. I rank it alongside 'Paths of Glory', 'The Pianist,', '1917' as a great war movie.

I obvious;y saw this film some 60 years ago but it stays in my mind of one of the great movies of all time. The story line is emphasised by the starkness of being shot in black and white bt Kubrick. Along side '1917' and 'The Pianist' one of the great movies of all time.

A great film that needs concentration to enjoy its subtleties. I am reviewing this film some 18 years after seeing it but it remains in my memory as one of the greatest films I have ever seen.

Astonishingly realistic that captures what must be the horrors of the battlefield.
