I will never forget the first time I heard Led Zeppelin, it was Xmas 88, I was 16, and we were at a family friends place, who was a doctor. His house was a cool two story place in the country, with a tennis court, pool, and a huge garden which was his pride and joy.
After a rather large dinner everyone retreated to the tv lounge so I thought I’ll have a look upstairs. It didn’t take me long to find the music room, and l can still remember the site of records stacked all over the room, stacks on the floor, some on the speakers, god knows how many albums where there, but I made my way to the player and on the deck was Led Zeppelin four. Having heard so much about this band I thought, so this is the mighty Led Zeppelin, and I dropped the needle. The volume was up a lot, half maybe, which made this moment even more unforgettable, hearing The Immigrant Song on that machine at that volume at that time, changed my life forever. I was about to play the song for the third time when mum came in and said, turn that down, I didn’t realise but the sound system had speakers all through the house.
Anyway a few days later I purchased ‘Houses of the Holy’ and put it on in my room, the volume was up, again, maybe half, again, and it happened, again, ‘The Song Remains The Same’ blew me away even more, and is still my favourite song, except for Stairway. The album is a little off the beaten track for the band especially at that time, but it’s still a great album, and it’s definitely in with all the other albums on my IPhone on shuffle.
