There is much more about Lanthimos’ universe than meets the eye. You need to watch “The killing of a Sacred Deer” closely and attentively ( and even imaginatively) , think deep and hard of the trope and “appropriations “ derived from Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Aulis”( with a faint echo of Sophocles’”Oedipus the Rex” associated with the bleeding eyes) as well as the cold irony/chilling satire on humans’ arrogance, which has been amplified by the overtly exaggerated and glorified claims on any development in science. The “surgical knife” held by Lanthimos is cutting open the spotless, flawless and seemingly progressive facade of the “Brave New World”! Very thought-provoking in vision and provocative in plots and visual/sound design!
