I have read Hillbilly Elegy twice it is one of my most favorite recent books. The movie is overall good and it does hit a number of the high points of the book. The movie does focus on Beverly’s addiction a bit more than I would have done. I would have like to see a bit more focus on what I take as J. D.’s main point in the book where he thanks the people that helped him break the cycle of issues that plagued his family. If you have read the book the movie does connect these things but it also focuses on how difficult of a choice that J.D. had to make to choose a better life eventually with Usha instead of being sucked into the plight of his mother and the community that Middletown had become as he explains in the book.
