This is a surprisingly good movie. I had no expectations going into it, but was curious as to why there seemed to be so much controversy.
First, the actors are fantastic. Margot and Ryan are perfection and so many of the other actors America, Michael etc are amazing. The sets are incredible and the costumes are superb. The dance number was hilarious. However, if I am being honest it had funny moments but I felt that got over sold a bit (although I did laugh out load at the pretending to care about the Zack Snyder Justice League movie - I tried soooo hard to care about that but honestly I fell asleep mid way through).
Now for the plot (Spoilers ahead) - I got it. I see other people saying they were confused. It all seemed pretty obvious to me. Perfect Barbie starts becoming less perfect, tries to understand why, travels to the real world and discovers its the opposite of "perfect barbie land run by women", Ken discovers patriarchy and brings it back to barbie land brainwashing the women and ruining it overnight, barbies fight to take it back and win, barbie and ken discover their own identities. Simple.
So much of this movie is about the moment you realize life isn't perfect, and just why and how its broken and the emotional response to that. Barbie land is not perfect nor is the real world. Ken felt so isolated and purposeless that the second he felt an ounce of appreciation he took over Barbie land. The real world is not perfect...well we all know why - and Barbies experiencing seeing that is the point. In recognizing the intent of her purpose as well as the actual outcome (not all bad just not all good).
This movie is about the human experience. Its not some man-hating women are superior thing. If you walked out of this film thinking that - you had that expectation going in and self-fulfilled it. And if you wanted Barbie land to be a utopia where they learned equality and let men take 50/50 (ya know after they literally took over and brainwashed everyone), that would be such a terrible end and not the point. Barbie land learned they weren't perfect and started taking steps, that's the point - that we should take steps to better our worlds (barbie land and real world).
Barbie's experience at the end of the movie is the biggest message of the film - the choice to fully experience humanity knowing it is imperfect and needs a lot of work.
Its fun - go see it. Kids wont understand most of it but likely will enjoy the style. Have some thought provoking conversations after and enjoy.
