The witty, sophisticated writing is one of the stars of this classic tale of behind-the-scenes Broadway. Bette Davis is perfect as the theater star who is aging out of ingenue roles and Anne Baxter who seems sweet but has plans to replace Bette. Perfectly written and perfectly cast. Still relevant due to ageism in show business.

Overlong and the revolution/war can be confusing. But absolutely beautifully shot with long vistas of Russia, mainly snow swept winter scenes but some daffodil filled springtime. Beautiful interiors in the pre-war section. Plus the rural mansion where every inch of the interior is coated in ice and snow. Acting is good, Omar shows the character’s sensitive poetic side. Steiger makes a good villain, Chaplin and Christie give strong performances as the women in zhivago’s life. Well worth a watch
