This is Heart of Darkness in space! As the book is amazing, that’s a good baseline to work from, and this film delivers. The film lives or dies on the depiction of the central character and Brad Pitt gives a subtle and nuanced performance. That’s right - Brad Pitt gives a subtle and nuanced performance. I never thought I would ever say that! The film explores emotional disengagement, loss and most importantly the father-son relationship. There are good set pieces although sometimes they feel a bit contrived and unrelated to the film - space pirates anyone. On the whole a good film, but be prepared to engage your brain - Transformers it ain’t.
