The characters are nice. The storyline is probably better than the previous gen. I even like the rival, which is not something I've been able to say for a while. That said, the game is missing mechanics compared to previous games and is a graphical nightmare. It's not just lag - although that's a pretty big issue and has led to the game crashing at least once for me. There are missing textures, the animation rigs slip on characters, the draw distance seems random so stuff pops in and out of existence, and there are dev markers that pop up randomly because they forgot to remove them. I've got a lot of opinions about the creativity and theme of this game (I liked the theme, but a few of the Pokemon felt like cutting room floor rescues), but I don't think you can argue that this game isn't the quality I'd expect from one of the biggest companies in the world.
