Brilliantly spectacular but weak lead acting.
I too was doubtful with all the mixed reviews but I am glad that I decided to watch the movie. When it comes to Sci-Fi movies, you should be open to the film makers imagination and allow yourself to be drawn in and try not to be too critical. I loved most of the movie which takes you to a new worlds and dimensions. There was only a couple of minutes of boredom. Mainly when Valerian was trying to love up Laureline. Thrilling moments one after the other and a subtle theme of love throughout but, unfortunately, Valerian just comes off as a letch . Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Has the feeling of Avatar, Fifth element, a little bit of Star Wars Mos Isley and quite a bit of Ready Player One. A serious failing though is the casting of Dane DeHaan as Major Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Sergeant Laureline. There was some really awkward acting when you first meet the main characters. Cringe-worthy stuff. These two actors are far too unskilled and uncharismatic for the roles. They have no chemistry between each other. Their acting is quite weak. Also, the leads should be someone who look older than seventeen . It's impossible to believe that they're actually cops or military. If you look at the Us military as an example, most majors are forty and most sergeants are at least late twenties. That aside though, it was a mostly enjoyable Sci-Fi spectacle and I would recommend it to hard core Sci-Fi fans. Others might find it convoluted. Three stars.
