Overall, it's a good book, dark and revealing of humanities worst qualities.
I'm only giving it 3 stars however, because of a particular scene where one of the children recounts the moments he killed his mothers kitten.
I'm particularly sensitive to animals being tortured (especially cats) and I couldn't read through that part as it made me queasy. If it was stated simply as the fact he did it, it be fine, instead it goes into detail about the act for about 4 pages... including how he treated the body after.
If you are also sensitive to animal torture, I'd proceed with caution.
It's a little slow to start, but dark and quick once the scenes are set up.
