This was a pleasant surprise. Not every song was of the highest quality, but even the naff tracks were perfectly fine. The only skippable track, for me, was "Fly Away," the original album closer; it's just way too long and doesn't really go anywhere. My favourite songs are:
▪︎ "Story To A Friend" - I dig the groovy flutework and 70s-era Traffic atmosphere. This could've fit on Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys or even When The Eagle Flies. All that's missing is Little Stevie Winwood on the vox.
▪︎ "Peace In The End" - Great vocals, catchy. A real Earworm.
▪︎ "The Dead Salute" - another really good tune. It took a few listens to sink in, but I'd say this is a highlight.
I also loved "Loving You Takes So Long" and the bonus track "Blind Willie Johnson." Opener "The Last Ocean Rider" is also pretty damn good.
A more concise review: I liked this album a lot, even the so-so songs are okay.
