I had a few gripes about the movie such as the songs were crammed in without the smooth transition as the first, but it fits in with the times. The movie has some serious life messages and dark moments which is very reminiscent of the older Disney like 101 Dalmations, the Great Mouse Detective, and the Rescuers and employs old school foreshadowing. But Mary is working in a generation of economic depression and strife, family emotional depression, fast changing ideas and culture than the first. You can feel it as Mary does her best to brighten and sooth a high stress moment for the children. The children are different and the family dynamic is different Michael and Jane never in a moment forgets the family.
The theme of 'Theres not enough time and you are falling behind.' Is all over the story, but when it is bright, its bright. The story is good and i cannot compare it to the first because the Nanny is helping the children navigate a different difficulty which can mirror today's problems and i think the story is good for families in similar situations or people feeling what Michael is feeling. However it is my opinion that the movie will be better understood by older children like the 2018 Banks kids rather than younger where the original might be better suited where it emphasizes child like wonder to restore family, whereas the 2018 uses childlike wonder as a coping mechanism. The movie ends on a literal high note. And I smile as I think of it because in recent days I have been feeling the world has gone turtle.
